Probabilistic Fracture Analysis of Functionally Graded Materials - Part I: Uncertainty and Probabilistic Analysis Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
Probabilistic fracture analysis is performed for predicting uncertain fracture responses of Functionally Graded Material (FGM) structures. The uncertainties in material properties including Young's modulus and fracture toughness are considered. The limit state function for a crack initiation event is defined in terms of the J-integral for FGMs. The First-Order-ReliabilityMethod (FORM) is used in conjunction with a finite element code that computes the J-integral with high accuracy. A two-step probabilistic analysis procedure is proposed to investigate the effects of the uncertainties in the spatial distribution of Young's modulus on the probability of crack initiation in FGMs. First, we investigate the effects of the uncertainties in the shape of the spatial distribution by considering the slope and the location of the inflection point of a spatial distribution profile as random quantities. Second, we investigate the effects of the spatial fluctuations of Young's modulus by making use of a discretized random field. The companion paper (Part II) implements this method into a finite element fracture analysis code and presents numerical examples.

Probabilistic Evaluation on the Free Vibration of Functionally Graded Material Plates Using 3D Solution and Meta-Model Methods
This paper presents a probabilistic assessment on the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material plates, including layers with magneto-electro-elastic properties, using the 3D solution and surrogate models. The plate is located on an elastic foundation and the intra-layer slipping effect is also considered in the analysis by employing the generalized intra-layer spring model. Due t...

متن کاملA new brittleness index for estimation of rock fracture toughness
Assessment of the correlation between rock brittleness and rock fracture toughness has been the subject of extensive research works in the recent years. Unfortunately, the brittleness measurement methods have not yet been standardized, and rock fracture toughness cannot be estimated satisfactorily by the proposed indices. In the present study, statistical analyses are performed on some data col...

Stress-intensity factors (SIFs) are the most important parameters in fracture mechanics analysis of structures. These parameters are evaluated for a stationary crack in functionally graded plates of arbitrary geometry using a novel Galerkin based mesh-free method. The method involves an element-free Galerkin method (EFGM), where the material properties are smooth functions of spatial coordinate...
متن کاملElectrical and Mechanical Performance of Zirconia-Nickel Functionally Graded Materials
In the present work, six-layered (Zirconia/Nickel) functionally graded materials were fabricated via powder metallurgy technique (PMT). The microstructure, fracture surface and the elemental analysis of the prepared components were studied, and their linear shrinkage, electrical conductivity, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were evaluated. The results show that the linear shrinkage of t...
